Monster Kid (take II)

Now that I am older,
not so young
as I used to be,

 the songs that I remember
are those
the monsters taught me.

 They sang from flickering
TV screens,
and the darkness
beneath my bed.

 Unafraid,
my young heart harkened
to every word they said.

 The lonely  song
of The Outsider looking in,
the shambling figure
who gets gets the girl

 and loses her again.

 For me
no truer tune ever rang
than those dark lullabies
the monsters sang.

 And now that I’m over,
as they say regarding age,
that proverbial hill,
nothing much has changed.

 I was a monster kid,
and I am still.

Among the Departed

For a long time
Death refused to look at me.

 Though, Goddess knows, I flirted
mercilessly.

 Or, perhaps,
the big D
simply couldn’t see

just to what I was up.

 In those days, of course,
I wore the magic hat
of youth

and drank from a golden cup.

I had yet to learn the lesson
that immortality is relative.

Now the clock is ticking faster
and I’ve forgotten
just what I was after

 when this whole thing started.

 And that, I’m sure,
is exactly
as it ought to be.

 For once I’m gone
and among the departed

it will all come back to me.

Life, that diligent poet

Life, that diligent poet, day by day
Scrawls his work upon us
In blood and tears and sweat and spit
Until our time is measured in years
And we are covered in lines that he has writ.
Death, contrary, is in no hurry
To share her darker verse,
Saving the craft of her rhyme
For a quieter time
When we are more likely to enjoy it.
