Among the Departed

For a long time
Death refused to look at me.

 Though, Goddess knows, I flirted
mercilessly.

 Or, perhaps,
the big D
simply couldn’t see

just to what I was up.

 In those days, of course,
I wore the magic hat
of youth

and drank from a golden cup.

I had yet to learn the lesson
that immortality is relative.

Now the clock is ticking faster
and I’ve forgotten
just what I was after

 when this whole thing started.

 And that, I’m sure,
is exactly
as it ought to be.

 For once I’m gone
and among the departed

it will all come back to me.

Winter has come

Winter has come
as winter will
with bare bone skies
and catacomb chill.

At night we huddle
by the fire, clinging
one to one –

and try not to think
how far we’ve wandered
from the sun.

Charmed by poetry

Charmed by poetry
at an early age - I love
words on a page.

Reading poetry

Reading poetry
by gaslight
as my fathers might
had they read poetry.

This is Not My Heart

This is Not My Heart contains more than 70 poems written over the last decade or so and spanning styles from free and open verse to metered and lyrical rhyme. Subject matter is equally broad, covering slice of life observations on love, writing, and urban life, and fantastic flights of fantasy. A book that can be opened to wry insight and deft wordplay at any page.

Life, that diligent poet

Life, that diligent poet, day by day
Scrawls his work upon us
In blood and tears and sweat and spit
Until our time is measured in years
And we are covered in lines that he has writ.
Death, contrary, is in no hurry
To share her darker verse,
Saving the craft of her rhyme
For a quieter time
When we are more likely to enjoy it.
